The focus on diabetes is grounded in the Federation’s Ministry of Health and World Health Organization priorities. Type 2 diabetes is of great concern to public health officials worldwide because of its increased prevalence, exacting negative consequences on individuals,their families and the health systems that support them.

The MHIRT research project in St. Kitts and Nevis seeks to identify the prevalence and distribution of type II diabetes in St. Kitts and Nevis. 

Determining the Adult Prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes and its Risk Factors in Nevis

The study’s purpose was to provide the Nevis Ministry of Health (MOH) information about the prevalence and distribution of type 2 diabetes cases and risk factors for diabetes through a randomized chart review of the six publicly funded health centers.

Determining Perceptions of Type 2 Diabetes Risk in St. Kitts and Nevis

Using the World Health Organization (WHO) STEPwise approach to noncommunicable disease risk factor surveillance (STEPS) instrument, persons from both islands were surveyed to assess behaviors associated with type 2 diabetes risk and general knowledge about the disease, its prevention and management.

Using BMI to Determine Type 2 Diabetes Risk in Nevis Children

The purpose of this study was to evaluate BMI trends in a sample of students graduating from high school between the years 2010-2015 to determine the prevalence and distribution of type 2 diabetes risk over time. BMIs are record at kindergarten, sixth grade and graduation by community health nurses.  

Food Choices and Behaviors while Watching Television in St. Kitts and Nevis

This study examined the self-reported eating patterns that may present type 2 diabetes risk factors in families through market surveys of adults. Tallying of predatory marketing of sugar-based foods and beverages during prime viewing hour for children was also included in the study.
