CGHE University Scholar Award Policies

  • All student international travel is subject to the University Policy on Student International Travel and will continue to require a favorable review of local health, safety, and security conditions and individual student plans. Adherence to the UVA policies on COVID-19 and the International Studies Office Hoos Abroad processes is required as part of your CGHE application.
  • Each student who intends to conduct research at a global site must complete a Hoos Abroad Travel Registry (or other appropriate International Studies Office) application. If needed, contact hoosabroad@virginia.edu for guidance.
  • Institutional Review Board (IRB): It is your responsibility to comply with any UVA Institutional Review Board requirements which may apply to your work. (Either through the Office of Social and Behavioral Sciences: IRB-SBS  or, with your faculty mentor, through the Office of  Health Sciences Research, IRB-HSR.) All UVA School of Medicine students engaged in work which requires IRB oversight are expected to conduct their work under approved protocols led by SOM Faculty Principal Investigators.
  • If you are a student in the School of Medicine: Eligible proposals should be conducted in School of Medicine elective and research sites (Tanzania, Uganda, South Africa, Rwanda, India). Medical students involved in research which falls under HSR IRB purview must conduct their work as a sub-investigator under an existing protocol led by a UVA faculty member or must work under an established protocol at a partner university.
  • GSGS3220 Making Culture Visible: This is a 1 credit course required for undergraduates, graduating students, and students matriculated in a 4+1 program. You will be automatically registered and CGHE will cover the cost of tuition for all students who are required to enroll.
  • Funds Disbursement: Pending compliance with all award requirements, typically approved funds will be issued via SIS on or around June 1. Funds will not be disbersed unless requirements are completed by May 1.
  • Enrollment status: Only students currently enrolled at the University of Virginia are eligible to apply.
  • Academic standing: Students are only eligible to apply for awards if they are in good academic standing, meaning that a student on academic probation may not apply.
  • The CGHE University Scholar Award is a substantive engagement in global research practices including proposal development, project management, ethical and institutional compliance, partnership and community building, and analysis, publication and presentation. All scholars are expected to participate in the following:
