CGHE provides travel support for Phase 3/M4 students pursuing clinical or research rotations in resource-limited settings. Electives conducted at an approved UVa School of Medicine International Elective site including South Africa, Uganda, Rwanda, Costa Rica, India, and Tanzania are eligible for funding support.
Students interested in global rotations are strongly encouraged to attend sessions in the Global Partnership Essentials course, led by UVA faculty, to support equitable, ethical global engagement.
Generally, funding support covers the approximate cost of International airfare.
The annual application deadline is May 31st. All eligible students considering an elective are encouraged to apply even if global rotation plans are tentative. All Phase 3 rotations are eligible for support, including those which precede the deadline. At the deadline, the CGHE Scholar Award in Medicine budget is allocated to all eligible applicants, and funds are distributed through the UVA School of Medicine Office of Financial Aid once global rotations are added to students' OASIS schedule.
The CGHE Scholar Award in Medicine was established in 1978 by CGH Founding Director, Dr. Richard Guerrant.
